I know this is super old, but one mod I can recommend to get rid of the ugly Whiterun area is The Great Forest of Whiterun Hold combined with Simply Bigger Trees. Turns the flat, boring area into one of the most beautiful areas in the game, especially with Verdant. But very frame heavy if your system can't handle it.
